Rare, robust doors salvaged from an old, apartment building in Brooklyn, NY. The building was built around the turn of the previous century and these doors were original to the building's construction. Each door is made of solid pine and has a long recessed panel contoured with an Arts and Crafts style, stepped molding. When most people hear "pine" they think of a cheap, weak, and soft wood.
New pine hewn from 10 - 20 year old trees doesn't have the same insect-resistant, rot-resistant, or even fire-resistant qualities that old pine, hewn from trees hundreds of years old has. Old pine is also much harder and stronger than young pine. Hardware : Neither door is equipped with any hardware. Uneven Height & Width : The height of Door#1 and the width of Door#2 were unevenly cut by 1/4 at some point, most likely to compensate for a warped floor or settling foundation.Condition : We didn't personally remove the doors, and the guys who did were not careful about how they removed them. As a result, there are chips and scrapes along the edges, breaks by the hinge mortises, and 3 deep scrapes under the panel on the exterior side of Door#2. However, since each door was built like a rock and made to last forever, these are just minor, cosmetic blemishes. Most of the blemishes will disappear after sanding, prior to refinishing or repainting, and whatever remains will be subtle, character marks. There is nothing serious like broken or cracked joints, rot, or warp.
We included a photo of the top of the the hinge stile of Door#2. It appears that it's cracked in half. However, if you look closely, you'll notice the crack is perfectly straight and that the wood grain on one side of the crack differs from the wood grain on the other side. That's because the stile is made up of 2 separate boards and not a single board. The crack is actually a seam or what is called a, "glue line, " where the 2 boards were joined.
Even with this tiny separation, the stile is still tight and firm. Refinish/Repaint : We could refinish, repaint, or partially or completely strip the doors to prepare it for you to repaint or refinish. Both doors are set up to swing into a room, towards the right. We could make either or both swing in the opposite direction. Modification : Do you want to turn these 2 into a pair? Do you want to replace the panels with glass, screen/mesh, or something else? We could modify the doors to fit your opening or suite your needs. We could make a frame, trim or add to the height or width, reverse the swing, plug the hardware holes, etc. Door#1 : 30" W x 79 3/4 " - 80" H x 1 3/4 " D. Door#2 : 29 3/4 " - 30" W x 80 5/8 " H x 1 3/4 " D.
