At the point of salvage , we found the top warped like a banana (see last photo). It needed to be replaced and rather than just adding a wooden top and increasing the sale price of the item, we left it without a top. You could add any kind of top: marble, glass, wood, metal, etc. The door and panels next to it are adorned with decorative appliques. Five of these appliques are either chipped or missing (see photos).
If you are planning on painting the cabinet, the missing details could be hand-molded using a combination of putty or spackle and wood glue. If you want to stain and finish, the missing portions would have to be filled in with small pieces of wood or left alone if you don't mind. Our carpenter thoroughly inspected it and found no repairs to make nor any joints to reinforce. The cabinet has many nicks, scratches, and spots of worn finish, which is common wear for a piece this old. However, there are no breaks, cracks, rot, warp, or any other serious flaws; no odors either. The bench is strong, sturdy, and is ready for another lifetime of service!
